Homemade Sweet Potato Dog Treats (Simple, Soft & Cozy)

🏡 A Quiet Kind of Recipe

Some recipes are made for occasions.

Others are made for ordinary afternoons.

This one sits somewhere in between. Not special in the way a celebration is, but special in the way small habits become part of a home.

The slow warmth of the oven, the soft smell of sweet potato, the little hopeful eyes watching from the kitchen floor.

These homemade sweet potato dog treats are simple, nourishing, and easy to make with just a few ingredients you probably already have at home. No complicated steps, no unnecessary extras. Just a gentle recipe for something your dog will truly enjoy.

Why Sweet Potato Treats?

Sweet potatoes are naturally soft, slightly sweet, and easy on digestion. They are often a good option for dogs with sensitive stomachs.

They also bring a soft texture to treats, which makes them especially nice for:

or simply dogs who prefer softer bites

dogs with sensitive teeth

The Texture Dogs Love

One of the nicest things about these treats is how soft they are.

They are not crunchy biscuits that snap in half.
They are gentle, slightly tender, almost cake-like inside.

Some dogs get very excited about that.

If your dog tends to chew slowly, or prefers softer treats, you might notice they take their time with these. A little pause, a small chew, then that satisfied look they give you as if to say, yes, this one is good.

Little Ways to Make It Your Own

Once you try this recipe once, you can adjust it quietly to fit your dog.

You might:

  • make smaller bite-sized drops for training
  • flatten them slightly for a more even bake
  • bake them a little longer for a firmer outside

There is no strict rule here.
It is more about finding what your dog seems to enjoy most.

A Note About Simple Ingredients

It can feel reassuring to know exactly what goes into your dog’s treats.

No long ingredient list.
No unfamiliar additives.
Just a few basics you recognize and can trust.

That simplicity is part of the comfort.
Not just for your dog, but for you too.

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet potato

  • ¼ cup (60 ml) vegetable oil

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

  • 1 cup (125 g) unbleached flour

Directions

  • Prepare the sweet potato
    Preheat your oven to 180°C.
Bake the whole sweet potato for about 30 minutes, until soft.
Let it cool, then peel and cut into small cubes.
  • Mix the dough
In a mixing bowl, combine the vegetable oil and beaten egg.
Add the sweet potato cubes and mash everything together until soft and slightly chunky.
Gradually add the flour and mix until you get a soft dough.
  • Shape the treats
Scoop small spoonfuls of dough and place them onto a lightly greased baking tray.
You can keep them rustic and simple, or gently shape them with your hands.
  • Bake
Bake for about 20 minutes, until lightly golden.
Let them cool completely on a rack before giving one to your dog.

Notes

  • Storage
Keep the treats in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
They will stay fresh for a few days.
Because they are soft and homemade, they are best enjoyed sooner rather than later.

Every dog is different. If your dog has allergies or a sensitive diet, introduce new treats slowly and in small amounts.
  • Can I freeze these treats?
Yes, you can freeze them in small batches and thaw when needed.
Can I use whole wheat flour?
Yes, if your dog tolerates it well.
    Can I make them crispier?
You can bake them a little longer at a lower temperature for a firmer texture.

The Waiting Part

If you have ever baked anything with a dog nearby, you already know this part.

The waiting.

The quiet pacing in the kitchen.
The occasional look toward the oven.
Maybe a small hopeful sniff in the air.

They do not know what is coming exactly.
But they know it is something good.

When to Give These Treats

These treats work well in small everyday moments.

After a walk.
During a calm training session.
Or simply as a gentle “just because.”

They are not meant to replace meals.
Just to add a little warmth to the day.

There is something very grounding about doing small things for the ones we care about.

Cutting a sweet potato.
Mixing a simple dough.
Waiting while it bakes.

It is not complicated.
But it stays with you.

And maybe that is enough.
